This is a brilliant art glass vase with a squatty form featuring a criss-cross net or web pattern reflecting a strong cobalt blue with some purples and rust and other colors. The colors continuously change depending on the lighting and background. The vase was hand blown, the base was ground smooth, and it is signed by Southern California artist STUART ABELMAN of Los Angeles (Van Nuys) and dated 1993.
Stuart Abelman founded Abelman Art Glass in 1976. He received his BFA from Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh and his MFA from UCLA. While at UCLA he oversaw the glassblowing department at El Camino College in Torrance, California.
"Stuart Abelman was one of a select group of pioneering studio glass artists who saw the magic and challenge in glass and set about starting the Studio Art Glass Movement... Stuart uses his own formulas and the finest silica sand to ensure the purest quality glass possible. Each piece is made entirely of hot molten glass and is worked and completed at the furnace. All the colors and design patterns are formed from the hot glass. No paint is used. Many of the beautiful colors are made with gold, silver and other precious metals... Stuart’s glass pieces are shown in galleries and museums around the world and have become permanent additions to museum, private and celebrity collections here and overseas. The Kobe Museum in Japan has a piece in its collection, and his piece in the permanent collection of the Corning Museum is particularly notable for its infusion of life into a figurative sculpture in glass." {quotes are from Abelman Art Glass web site}
This piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. It's a one of a kind beautiful art glass piece from a highly regarded artist. It would make a splendid gift.
